Ultrasound is cyclic sound pressure with a frequency greater than the upper limit of human hearing. Although this limit varies from person to person, it is approximately 20 kilohertz (20,000 hertz) in healthy, young adults and thus, 20 kHz serves as a useful lower limit in describing ultrasound. The production of ultrasound is used in many different fields, typically to penetrate a medium and measure the reflection signature or supply focused energy. The reflection signature can reveal details about the inner structure of the medium, a property also used by animals such as bats for hunting. The most well known application of ultrasound is its use in sonography to produce pictures of fetuses in the human womb. There are a vast number of other applications as well.

Approximate frequency ranges corresponding to ultrasound, with rough guide of some applications A fetus in its mother's womb, viewed in a sonogram (brightness scan) An ultrasound examination in Germany, 1990

How accurate is my first vaginal ultrasound to determine how far along baby is?
Q. My LMP was July 11, 2008 with regular 28 day cycles (for the past 7 months it's been 28 days). Calculations from LMP gave me a due date of April 17, 2008. I just had my first vaginal ultrasound and my baby measured to be 8 weeks with EDD of April 17, 2008. Is it very possible that calculations from LMP and measurement of baby be right on the money?

What is the difference between an ultrasound and a CT scan?
Q. I've had an ultrasound already but now I'm having a CT scan. It's of the abdomin and pelvis for some abdominal discomfort I've been having.

A. Well, the CT scan will be in a machine. You lay down on a table and it moves you into a tube type thing and it takes pictures. Sort of like the MRI machines, but they don't use magnets and it doesn't spin. All you do is lay down and wait.
