Medicine is the art and science of healing. It encompasses a range of health care practices evolved to maintain and restore health by the prevention and treatment of illness.

Contemporary medicine applies health science, biomedical research, and medical technology to diagnose and treat injury and disease, typically through medication, surgery, or some other form of therapy. The word medicine is derived from the Latin ars medicina, meaning the art of healing.

Though medical technology and clinical expertise are pivotal to contemporary medicine, successful face-to-face relief of actual suffering continues to require the application of ordinary human feeling and compassion, known in English as bedside manner.

How can I get medical experience while being a full time college student?
Q. I'm currently a freshman. After I'm done getting my four year degree, I want to go to medical school to study pathology. I know you have to have some experience or show some interest in the medical field before you apply to medical school. How can I gain experience while being a full time college student? Are there any work/volunteer programs that are associated with pathology or a similar field? If so, could you give the names of these programs and organizations? I deeply appreciate your help.

A. When you first start out expect $8 to $10 an hour. Near the end of your first year, with experience and speed, an average MT earns $18 to $20 an hour. Per year an average MT w/ 1 year experience earns about $24,000-$29,000 per year but that is working about 5 hours a day.

What medical programs are there that only require a certificate or one year of education?
Q. I have a bachelor's degree in psychology and have been trying to get into pharmaceutical sales. Due to the economy, no luck there! So I've decided to do something in the medical field since I would be almost guaranteed to find a job. I have just done four years in school and don't want to do a lot more! Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

A. Do you have anatomy, physiology and biology? These are the main pre-requisites to most worthwhile careers in health care. If you do have these, why don't you just get a masters in nursing. Because you have a bachelors, you may be able to find a fast-track program for registered nursing. i dont know if the fast track program is contingent on you already having the above sciences, or not. check colleges in your area for this fast-track or accelerated RN program : )
