A. If that is all you want to do, you can do that with a cheapie code reader from Auto-Zone. Consider this- For proper diagnostics, many times the tech has to be able to see more than DTCs. He has to also be able to read the freeze-frame, as well as see live date, and if he wants control of the system to verify failures/repairs, the equipment must also be capable of bi-directional communication. The ability to read Mode $06 and $07 data is also valuable. Add to this list the upcoming CAN protocol (Controller Area Network) requirement that most current code readers cannot communicate with, and the capabilities just fell to the floor. There are a few possibilities, some very expensive (V-Tronics, SnapOn MODIS, etc.) and some not so expensive. I… [cont.]

How long does a diagnostic test take at an auto shop?
Q. I dropped it off at 10am and I'm just wondering how long it generally takes before the diagnosis is complete (assuming they start on it right away- which is unlikely). I'm trying to figure out why it's jerking/ shaking and my RPM meter fluctuates when I'm at a stop and is worse when the heat is on. It actually shut off this morning! (hit adeer, but cosmetic damage is fixed) Also, what are the pros/ cons of a diagnostic test? I'm being charged $93 for the test, does that sound ok?

A. If there is no lights on the dash then the car is not doing what they call "throwing a code" Where they simply plug in a cumputer to the car, get the code and look in a book to see what the problem is. If they were busy expect to wait at least an hour before they look at your car. Especially if you drop it off, then they are not in a rush. $93 is ridiculous, just email me next time with symptoms. You need to find yourself a trustworthy repair guy and get him to do it for free. Secondly the hesitation and fluctuation could be a few small things. New spark plugs, tightening of the throttle cable, new air filter, some fuel system cleaner and a Throttle Body cleaning which if all done by yourself would cost maybe, maybe $50 in parts if… [cont.]

Can I get a diagnostic kit instead of taking it to a mechanic?

A. True: most auto parts stores will so a free check engine light test. False: the code read will be the exact problem with the vehicle. The code in the computer read by the scanner is just a starting point. It will not tell you what part to replace. Further trouble shooting is required. This type of work you will not get done free at a parts store.

A. If you don't have the digital odometer (really?? on a 2001?) then you will need to have the codes read by someone with a code reader. Autozone and Checker will do it for free...The plug should be under the dash.

What is the difference between a Diagnostic Radiologist and a Clinical Radiologist?

Asked by Evverr.So.Alllli - Sun Feb 1 14:20:49 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You must mean "interventional radiologist" . All radiologists are diagnosticians, or suggest the strongest clinical possibilities. They read x-rays for aberrations in body structures/anatomy and report back to the ordering physician. An interventional radiologist is one who does procedures on the body, such as angiography. A neuroradiologist reads scans: PET, SPECT, MRI (all types), and CT. A radiation oncologist designs radiation treatments for diseases like cancer and monitors their effectiveness. As for pay, radiologists often work as part of a doctors' group as an employee. The pay varies depending on the number of procedures, the hours worked, and any profit sharing. Radiologists work shifts in larger hospitals, usually for 12 hours.… [cont.]

A. No, that system is installed to find problems faster. But, just because you suspect a sensor being bad, does not mean it is the sensor itself. Also the on board system is used during assembly of the vehicle to allow the system to find any potential problems during manufacturing. Like before, just because you suspect a sensor, does not make it the sensor at fault. For instance, replaces a $200 Mass Air Flow sensor on a Chevy, come to find out, after going crazy trying to figure it out, that the entire problem was a 10 cent fuse that was located in a wiring harness under the hood of the car. Make sure you check or have checked every fuse and circuit breaker and inspected the wiring to make sure there is not an open circuit or cut wire… [cont.]

What does it mean when a diagnostic test is done on my 2003 Chevy Cavalier and the screen says fuel lean?
Q. My car starts, but then immediately dies out again. If anyone knows what fuel lean means on the diagnostic test, I would appreciate the help. Thanks.
Asked by AMH528 - Wed Apr 25 17:39:15 2007 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments

A. There are two directions to adjust fuel input, lean, or rich. Rich is more gas, lean is less gas. Air input is automatically adjusted by the car computer, and throttle inputs. In older cars, it's all or none in the air, and you have to change around stuff in the carb to change the air/fuel mixture. But nowadays, the computer can be adjusted to give you more fuel, or more air, or any number of things. Basically, your car isn't getting enough fuel to keep running. My car runs a little rich at idle, and leans out as it gets higher in RPM (thanks to an aftermarket custom chip), This allows me to set my idle RPM at 400 (yes, i'm serious, it runs, idle, at 400 RPM). In case you aren't sure, 400 RPM is below the 1 (1000) on the tachometer. You… [cont.]

A. Radiologists are physicians who earn a four-year doctoral degree to become an M.D. (medical doctor) or D.O. (doctor of osteopathy). They then complete a four-year residency in diagnostic radiology or radiation oncology. More than 90 percent of radiologists go on to become certified by the American Board of Radiology, indicating that they have passed a standardized national examination in radiology. Diagnostic radiologists specialize in the interpretation of medical images such as MR scans, CT scans, radiographs, nuclear medicine scans, mammograms and sonograms. They are specially trained to identify injury and disease in each of the body's systems, whether bone, tissue, organs or blood vessels. Radiologists may specialize in fields such… [cont.]

what is the differnce between an ultrasound technician and a diagnostic medical sonographer?
Q. ive been wanting to do something in the medical field for a while now, and i really want to do something with the ultrasound machines. i read online that a diagnostic medical sonographer only does the ultrasounds and a physician does the actual talking with the patient and tells them what's going on with their bodies. i want to be the one who does the ultrasound AND tells the patient the good and/or bad news. is that what a ultrasound technician does or would i have to get a degree in ultrasound technology and one to become a physician. or am i totally wrong?
Asked by a.jordan - Mon Aug 18 18:04:18 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You cannot diagnose a patient, unless you are a doctor. A radiologist is a medical doctor who will interpert the ultrasound (and x-rays and MRI and CT scans etc) images, that are taken by a sonographer (aka ultrasonographer aka ultrasound technologist). The radiologist then issues an imaging report to the patient's referring physician. So you are correct, in a way. But, any physician can buy themselves an ultrasound machine and scan their patients theirselves...although I think it is a bad idea, actually. Sonographers and radiologist spend years learning ultrasounds, and it takes that amount of time to become sufficient.

Asked by Grilled Cheese - Thu Apr 24 00:17:10 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. When thinking about entering an ultrasound program, you need not be concerned so much about certificate vs. degree. What is important is that you go to an accredited program, whether it is college or hospital based. An accredited program allows you to take your registry (licensing) exams upon graduation. Once you get licensed, you will never be asked about your schooling again. An employer does not care what route you take to get licensed, they just want you to have that license. Don't waste your time or money on a NON-accredited program. Upon completion and graduation from a NON-accredited program, you must work in the field of sonography for a full year prior to taking your licensing examinations. But, you will have a hard time finding… [cont.]

A. Collect the gas formed and do a pop test for hydrogen. Put phenolphthalein in the water - if it goes purple, hydroxide ions are formed. You could also measure the pH of the water before and after the reaction using a pH meter. Testing for sodium ions in the water after the reaction is a bit tough - can't really think of anything easy to do in classroom situation.
