Endoscopy means looking inside and typically refers to looking inside the body for medical reasons using an instrument called an endoscope. Endoscopy can also refer to using a borescope in technical situations where direct line-of-sight observation is not feasible. OverviewEndoscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic medical procedure that is used to assess the interior surfaces of an organ by inserting a tube into the body. The instrument may have a rigid or flexible tube and not only provide an image for visual inspection and photography, but also enable taking biopsies and retrieval of foreign objects. Endoscopy is the vehicle for minimally invasive surgery, and patients may receive conscious sedation so they do not have to be consciously aware of the discomfort. Many endoscopic procedures are considered to be relatively painless and, at worst, associated with moderate discomfort; for example, in esophagogastroduodenoscopy, most patients tolerate the procedure with only topical anaesthesia of the oropharynx using lidocaine spray. . Complications are rare but can include perforation of the organ under inspection with the endoscope or biopsy instrument. If that occurs open surgery may be required to repair the injury. GNU Free Documentation License What is an endoscopy to test for celiac disease like? Q. Please tell me the procedure. Asked by all4Jesus - Mon Jul 13 20:37:00 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I have had an upper endoscopy, if that is what you are having. I had an IV, for conscious sedation. It will almost knock you out. I felt a small tube going down my throat, and i gagged for split second, then I woke up, went back to sleep, woke up again, and my friend was there to take me home. By the time I got home, I thought I was completely awake and was going to clean up, but ended up sleeping all day. it was the best sleep ever!! Good Luck, it was very easy. a little scary, but easy. From the time I left home, until the time I got back was about 2 hours. Answered by nil8_360 - Mon Jul 13 20:52:10 2009 Is it normal to feel sick the day after an endoscopy? Q. Q. It's scheduled at the same facility - - and it was suggested by my doctor. Just feeling a bit anxious!!! Asked by pup - Thu Jul 24 16:45:30 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. No you're not crazy. I work in an Endoscopy department and we call patients that have both done on the same day a "spinner". The prep for the colonoscopy is the hardest part of both the procedures. Having them done on the same day will prevent you from having to be "NPO" twice and the inconvenience of having to arrange a "driver" twice. Having them done on the same day is common. You'll do just fine! Answered by faya - Thu Jul 24 16:57:14 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Endoscopy" See also:
