An echocardiogram, often referred to in the medical community as a cardiac ECHO or simply an ECHO, is a sonogram of the heart. Also known as a cardiac ultrasound, it uses standard ultrasound techniques to image two-dimensional slices of the heart. The latest ultrasound systems now employ 3D real-time imaging. In addition to creating two-dimensional pictures of the cardiovascular system, an echocardiogram can also produce accurate assessment of the velocity of blood and cardiac tissue at any arbitrary point using pulsed or continuous wave Doppler ultrasound. This allows assessment of cardiac valve areas and function, any abnormal communications between the left and right side of the heart, any leaking of blood through the valves (valvular regurgitation), and calculation of the cardiac output as well as the ejection fraction. Echocardiography was an early medical application of ultrasound. Echocardiography was also the first application of intravenous contrast-enhanced ultrasound. This technique injects gas-filled microbubbles into the venous system to improve tissue and blood delineation. Contrast is also currently being evaluated for its effectiveness in evaluating myocardial perfusion. It can also be used with Doppler ultrasound to improve flow-related measurements (see Doppler echocardiography). Echocardiography is either performed by cardiac sonographers or doctors trained in cardiology. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How do I get to "shadow"/ intern in a medical school without affiliation from school. I am done with school? Q. I live in Atlanta, I am trying to get more experience in the echocardiography field in a teaching school. Asked by thanksforanswering - Thu Nov 20 22:59:59 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you are 18 years or older, you just look up cardiology physicians at the hospital you are interested in. If there is a physician you are interested in, consult the hospital and see if they allow shadowing and volunteering. If they do, contact the physician you are interested and politely request a shadowing session. If you are a MD, which your question suggests, then just do the same but ask the Cardiologist if he wants some free/cheap labor. He will say yes. They accept almost any certificate. No one has asked to see mine. Old OB Doc and Ultrasonogragher Answered by a simple man - Tue Jul 29 16:11:37 2008 Definition and uses of Pedoff Doppler.?
Q. How Pedoff Doppler can be use in Echocardiography. Asked by joyanjenkins - Thu Oct 26 08:27:58 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Continuous Wave Transducer (Pedoff) Dedicated 5 MHz continuous wave Doppler Deep venous and arterial applications Explora connector with exceptional broadband response and new cable technology that is extremely flexible and lightweight Used in Cardio Vascular surgeries, provides information about intracardiac blood flows and wall abnormalities.
